Behind the Scenes

I had a different behind the scenes already written for today, about a client graduating and moving on and how I handled that. Then I went to a conference on Friday where I watched a live podcast recording, pulled out my phone, and drafted a new version in the notes.

I’ve realized this year that I'm not a conference person, but I’m glad I was there for the live recording of that She Counts podcast. Both hosts shared that they had followed the advice to scale their accounting firms, regretted it, and had to do undo the results of that decision.

And it was a needed reminder to let myself be stubborn about what I didn't want to do. To stop trying to make my business make sense to the owners of a typical accounting firm.

I'm not a typical accountant.

I'm not the owner of a typical accounting firm.

And I don't want to be.

So what that means? I'm starting a paid newsletter.

Why a paid newsletter?

Yeah, you read that right. That was not on my 2026 Notion goals, but here we are.

First, I'm not making the whole newsletter paid. This monthly newsletter part will stay free.

But why a paid newsletter?

Well, I've tried to share how I think about money publicly, and something stops me. It's not embarrassment or imposter syndrome, because I will share freely on client calls, discovery calls and coffee chats. I WANT to share but I need an explicit opt-in, a very clear "yes, I want to hear about this from you”.

And every time I do share, I've had reactions ranging from "you should write a book" to someone almost crying on our coffee chat. Apparently I have a unique way of working with money that’s helpful for others. I have a long list of ideas to share, they just need the right space to start. So this is step 1 of me finding the right place to do that.

And why paid and not just a new email list?

Because I'm going to turn that money into the space and time I need to create.

And I also have this idea to gather and share what I'm learning from you creative and neurodivergent business owners about how you're managing your money. Because I'm seeing your spreadsheets and learning that you're doing a lot to manage your finances. The finance influencers are trying to teach you what to do, but you guys are already doing stuff. Does it need some tweaking and updating? Yes, but you’re not starting from nothing.

So if you're interested in seeing how I think about money, behind-the-scenes of building a business my way, and what I'm learning from creative and neurodivergent business owners who are already managing their finances (just differently)

Inside Your Money System

Most of the people I've talked to lately are using Wave for bookkeeping and love it. I used it myself years ago as a freelance interpreter, and had a client on it for a couple years

If you were one of the lucky ones with access to the paid features for free, then you've probably already seen the email: that benefit is going away. Which means you now have to decide: start paying for Wave or switch to different software altogether?

And if you're in the middle of running your business, this probably feels like one more thing you don’t want to spend the brain capacity figuring out right now.

So to help you think through this decision, I walk through what I would consider in this blog post: Your Old Wave Plan is Ending. What to Consider Before Deciding What's Next

Let’s Make This Easier

Building connections doesn't come naturally to everyone. It definitely doesn't for me, so learning how to do it intentionally was why I could say buh-bye to frantically posting on Instagram to unsuccessfully find clients.

And that's what Referral Partner Summer Camp helps with. It's a four-week online program sharing the tools and systems for building referral connections intentionally.
